We were very excited to be invited by the team at Maaya Kitchen to write a review on their restaurant. We had never tried this Indian before and having been following them on social media it sounded fantastic.
Maaya kitchen is in The Hub, just opposite the giant Sainsburys and round the corner from the main Hub square.
We arrived shortly after 7.15pm on a Thursday night and the restaurant was buzzing. What a great sign for a fun night out. We were excited to view the menu as it included some really off piste Indian dishes as well as your more traditional ones.
@Localfeasting we love a food memory and we were really excited to learn that each dish at Maaya had its own story of origin.
We really like trying lots of different dishes so we decided to go for the Banquet menu, which was £18.95 per person. It started with some really great starters. Before they arrived we were quickly served some fantastic poppadoms with mango chutney. They were really light and crisp and tasted awesome.
The Murgh Malai Tikka chicken was full of great flavours of ginger, garlic and coriander and really stimulated your tastebuds! The Onion Garam Pakora was great as well and went brilliantly with the creamy raitha. The Tulsi Sheekh was subtly flavoured and the vegetable samosas, not normally a favourite of mine had a great texture and good flavour.
We choose a really tasty Mango lassi and a Kingfisher Beer to accompany it.
A great start to our night out, the restaurant had a great atmosphere and had a variety of different people dinning : families with kids, groups of friends, couples and big groups. I spotted that they have a kids menu and if your child is not so keen on Indian there are the normal kids menu options too. Great if you fancy an Indian but feel you are often restricted by what the kids will eat! At £4.95 including a drink this is great value.
By the time we finished our starters the restaurant was totally full. Maaya was so busy the night we visited we had to wait rather a while for our main courses. When they did arrive they were presented beautifully in individual mini saucepans and they looked great.
The flavours were excellent, particularly the Chicken Tikka Masala, it had big chunky pieces of chicken which had been marinated in a really lovely sweet tikka sauce. It had a good kick to it but not too much. The lamb Rogan Josh had a super tomato base and the lamb was tender and delicious.
The accompanying Naan bread was really nicely cooked and was light and tasty to eat.
You can ask for a refill of main course on the banquet menu if you still have some room!
We did manage to squeeze in an Kulfi stick ice-cream which was great after all those spices.
Maaya also have a Chef’s table which I thought would be fun to go to, especially if you are having a celebration.
They have some great offers at the weekend to enjoy including a Banquet Menu and Thali’s, and they even offer a loyalty card with 30% off all takeaways.
Overall the food was good with some great flavours and I would be really up for trying some of the more unusual dishes they serve along with one of their cocktails! I would probably go on a quieter night next time so the service would be quicker or perhaps ask the waiter how long it was going to take to be fed!
